Deep in the woods camp
Description
Setting up camp less than 5 miles away from the enemy stronghold is never a good idea, and this is no exception. Part of my group's ongoing campaign, this battlemap represents their foolish atempt at a long rest deep within a forest, knowing that enemy patrols come around here routinely. Being this the case, the patrols know fairly well their surroundings, and being comprised of drow, ambushing a sleeping party at night is child's play.

The map contains a river, which is the same affluent as seen in the Forest river map of this same campaign, but here it has a much slower current, and it's quite wider. There are lots of trees (although not as many as it should, in order to make it easier to move the PCs/NPCs through the map), and a mysterious, big purple glowing tree (which you may hint at being some kind of druidic sacred tree through some check, in my case I let them harvest some sap for their potion brewing endeavours). The high ground upon which the camp is set up is around 50-60 feet high in the highest section.

This place was intended to be deep in the first lieutenant's territory, and as such, terrain benefits greatly their forces (renegade drow at night, a hobgoblin army by day). The sense of false security of having the high ground (Hello there), and being snuck up on by the enemy, is sure to be quite succesful in creating tension during the encounter (keep in mind that PCs will usually have 60ft darkvision at most, whilst drow boast 120ft AND proficiency in both perception and stealth, which makes it esasier for them to succeed in their checks). However, it is suited for any random encounter you may wish to have for your players during a long rest (but don't go and use creatures without darkvision ;) ).
